Lifestyle is the habitual attitudes, interests, behaviors, and social orientations of a specific individual, group, or society. The word was first introduced by Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler in his famous essay, The Case of Miss R. With the implied meaning of “the guiding principles that govern a human activity generally”

The term “Lifestyle” was first used by American psychiatrist and philosopher: Karl von Clausewitz. In his book, World War I, he wrote, “Lifestyle is the way of maintaining oneself to the requirements of his lifestyle, and the achievement of its aims”. It was also used by British philosopher and educator, Bertrand Russell. He wrote in his treatise, Principles of Popular Organisation, “Lifestyle means a system of habits, which may be called, more or less, the governing principles of conduct”.

In the field of individual psychology, the concept of lifestyle has a slightly different significance. Lifestyle in this case is the general way of being in the world and behaviour is central to this. The question of how to change one’s lifestyle is much more complicated than in the field of behaviour. Weber distinguished two general types of individual traits, namely, extrinsic (actual) and intrinsic (soft) traits.

Extrinsic traits are those that depend on external sources and are therefore, independent of the individual; they are not constrained by reference to the person who gave them birth. Intrinsic traits, however, are traits that depend on internal sources and are therefore, dependent upon the individual themselves. Examples of intrinsic traits in the area of lifestyle include values, beliefs, attitudes, personality, social media profile, mobility, occupational category, and knowledge.

Weber distinguished two important dimensions of lifestyle content namely, attitude and behavior. The level of attitude determines one’s level of social media participation, for Weber, those who have positive attitude have high social media participation while those who have negative attitude have low social media participation. Behavior on the other hand is a more specific dimension. It is measured by means of specific questions such as, “do you agree that violence against women is acceptable?” and “do you think that stealing is always wrong?”

It is with these dimensions in place that we can understand how to change one’s lifestyle by means of individual psychology. In order to test the two concepts of attitude and behavior we first need to have an understanding of the nature of the two concepts as it applies to human beings. Alberts Wolfe described attitude as, “the aptitude for self preservation in the face of danger”, while behavior as, “the ability to perform in the face of punishment”. Alberts Wolfe also pointed out that individual personality traits are formed by social environment, which can be broken down into five factors: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Dominance, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

A person is any population of people regarded as a whole consisting of at least the sub-populations defined by some statistician. It includes all people living in a territory irrespective of race, tribe, color, religion, or political affiliation. Thus, it includes the people of a country, state, province, district, or even town. The word, people, can be used and understood in different ways depending on the circumstances. Sometimes people are referred to as a community or a nation and sometimes a set of individuals.

To understand the concept of a people, it helps to take some examples. Consider a classroom in which most of the students are pupils from different countries. These students are considered to be collective “people” because they have the same surname, have the same culture, have the same birth dates, and so on. Similarly, all the members of a government or political party are considered to constitute a “people” because they live under one political system and share the same traits. A town comprised of a large number of inhabited towns is also the “people” because each of these towns has its own identity, history, culture, and so on. These things are collectively known as “forests”.

However, it is difficult to draw a demarcation between the concept of a people and that of an ethnic group. People are by definition a “people”. But ethnicity cannot be considered a people by itself. For example, an ethnic group like “Iranian Americans” can be considered the people by many people yet not by many members of this group. The term “Iranian Americans” itself denotes a set of nationalities rather than an ethnic group. In this way, the concept of a people becomes meaningless.

The origin of the concept of people lies in the Greek language where elision of the last syllable in a word meaning “people” produced the term “non-Greeks” which later became people nouns. Another example of this phenomenon is the English language that has borrowed many words from other languages but has retained the original meaning of the words (e.g., husband, land, etc.). In the case of people nouns, this evolution was apparent in terms of gender. For instance, while it was previously believed that the word “man” in addition to the feminine form “woman” indicated the people of a particular group, this was not the case in either the English or Spanish language.

As it is now, it is generally accepted that the word “people” in the English language refers to the members of a particular social class. There are many examples to this effect. A good example is the word “American”, which, according to Merriam Webster, signifies “a people of one race”. Similarly, “Chinese” and “Japanese” are people of one race although their cultural identities are vastly different. Another example is the word” Canadians” which means “the people of Canada”. The implication being made here is that there is no such thing as a generic people as there is a common person which, collectively, make up a social class that is identified by culture, nationality or descent and which, collectively, constitute a social group or community referred to as a people.

The etymology of the word “people” as revealed by its usage in modern English shows that it originally referred to a group of human beings who lived in ancient times. It is also evident from the use of “people” in association with animal names in the bible, both figuratively and literally, that it had more than an emotional connection with animal companions (Genesis 15:5-6 and 1 Chronicles 7:10-11 and Hebrews 9:3-4 and 1 Kings 6:2-3 respectively). Thus, it can be seen that “people” in the English language did not begin as an adjective but denotes a class of human beings.

Lifestyle is an essential part of culture. According to statistical research, the elements of a successful lifestyle are stable income, stable family life, and social contacts. The concept of lifestyle has various shades and forms. For example, in the American Family Therapy Association’s (AFA) definition, family life is the shared physical, mental, and emotional values that have been shaped since birth. These values are then passed down from parents to children to adults.

Other lifestyles refer to the types of activities people engage in. Some examples of lifestyles include: rural lifestyle, urban lifestyle, high-risk lifestyle, low-risk lifestyle, global lifestyle, international career, middle-aged lifestyle, senior lifestyle, international travelers’ lifestyle, active lifestyle, traditional lifestyle, animal-assisted therapy, vegetarian lifestyle, and health-risking lifestyle. These are just a few of the many lifestyles. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Associations, there was a strong link between social isolation and unhealthy outcomes for overweight adults.

In this study, researchers measured the impact of five popular lifestyle elements on obesity and found that social isolation significantly increased the odds of obesity. The elements were loneliness, isolation, social isolation, negative media messages about weight, and the presence of negative stereotypes about weight. The results were startling. Researchers found that those who had high levels of loneliness and isolated, low social network had higher odds of being obese.

Lifestyle has become an important focus in contemporary day individual psychology, especially in marketing. This emphasis has expanded into the realm of public health. In my own practice I notice that many times clients who have social anxiety disorders turn to me for help because they feel that the social media is playing a major role in fueling their depression. One such client was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and was coming to me for cognitive behavioral therapy.

We also use a social anxiety toolkit including: cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamics, self-help programs, and a healthy lifestyle strategy. One of the elements of the newly formed wellness center called the Florence Knoll was born out of our own work. The founder, Dr. Maria Montessori, sought to develop a collaborative environment that would foster open communication between fellow wellness professionals from different disciplines. She created a center that integrated many different perspectives with the sole goal of helping people who experience different challenges in their lives and in creating healthier, happier individuals. It was through the work of many contributors that this collaborative effort was born.

In my opinion, the Florence Knoll is the flagship wellness center in the united states. The founder, Dr. Maria Montessori, set out to make education and counseling more accessible to everyone. This project has grown into an international program that combines research and teaching in the most innovative and efficient way. I believe that the way that Dr. Hazel Anderson and Knoll have responded to their clients’ needs has been exemplary.
